The Salvation Army Celebrates 130 Years of Service

Bath, ME –The Salvation Army Bath Corps will celebrate its 130th year anniversary of service to the community with a special event at the Library Gazebo on the  Washington  Street side on Wednesday, August 24th from 6 – 8 pm. The public is invited to join us in this celebration.  Major Kenneth Henderson will give a brief history of The Salvation Army, followed by an awards presentation.  Children will be entertained with magic performed by Majors Angelo and Virginia Bermeo.  Also, enjoy music played by a Salvation Army Brass Ensemble. Children will be performing Award winning Sacred Dance and timbrels.

The Bath Salvation Army has ministered to the needs of residents since 1886 and values its charitable role in the city and 20 surrounding communities.  The organization has assisted Thousands of families and individuals over the years with basic social services including food, clothing, utilities and disaster services.  Also, during the holidays The Salvation Army assists families with food, clothing and, toys for youngsters at holiday’s including Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Youth programs are an important part of The Salvation Army.   They offer music and gospel arts, and Sunbeams and Boys Adventure Corps similar to the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts where they earn emblems.  These learning programs allow young people to develop their talents and confidence in a nurturing environment.  Also, this summer 30 children ages 7-16 attended The Salvation Army’s Camp Sebago in Standish, Maine. Camp Sebago provides children a wonderful camping experience at an affordable cost.

The Henderson’s have been the Corps Commanding Officers since 2006. Major Jean Marie states, “It has been a privilege for us to work with local businesses and agencies to best meet the needs of our neighbors who are struggling.”
