11 July 2018

On Tuesday, July 10, 2018 Ian Crocker joined The Salvation Army as they celebrated 60 years of providing children a camping experience at Camp Sebago.  Ian met with campers and hosted a swimming clinic, demonstrating swimming strokes and water safety.

Ian Crocker had a prolific swimming career spanning the better part of a decade.  After winning his first gold medal and setting a world record at the 2000 Sydney Olympics at only 18 years old, Ian started school at the University of Texas. He is one of the only swimmers in history to win the 100 butterfly at NCAA’s all 4 years of college. Internationally, Ian was Michael Phelps’ greatest rival and Ian held the world record in the 100m fly for 6 years!

Ian won a gold medal at all 3 Olympics he competed in and has set numerous World and American Records. He received many awards throughout his career, including the Golden Goggles award for Swim of the Year in 2005. In 2017, Ian was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame, the State of Texas Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame, The University of Texas Hall of Honor, and the International Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame.

Although a fierce competitor, it’s Ian’s compassionate coaching style that he is using to inspire the next generation of swimmers to achieve at the highest levels of the sport.

Camp Sebago has enriched the lives of many children each year since it’s opening in 1958. The camp in Standish, Maine provides a rich camping experience for over 1,000 children annually who would not otherwise have the opportunity.  Boys and girls ages 7-12 from Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont enjoy a week’s stay at camp.  The camp also offers wilderness activities for youth ages 13-16.
