The Salvation Army's Star Search is a program that encourages the development of soloists and groups in music and dramatic arts.  It can help a child to understand the importance of proper preparation and of presenting themselves in a positive way. 

Here in Northern New England, the Divisional Music & Gospel Arts program is under the leadership of Dr. Andrew Poulopoulos.  Drew states, “We are proud of all participates in this years competition.”

One facet of the Music & Gospel Arts program is Star Search, The Salvation Army's version of American Idol.

Children perform in the following Music & Gospel Arts Categories:

  • Brass Soloist
  • Drama Monologue
  • Drama Troupe
  • Guitar
  • Piano
  • Singing Company
  • Snare Drum
  • Sacred Dance Solo & Troupe
  • Timbrel
  • Vocal Soloist
  • Youth Band

Salvation Army Centers throughout the division are encouraged to develop their musical and gospel arts programs. Students age 6-21 participate and those who excel in their programs continue on to the annual Divisional Star Search competition at Divisional Headquarters in Portland, Maine.

Students are rated by a panel of judges on their performances.  1st place winners in various categories such as Brass soloist, Drama Monologue, Singing Company, Youth Band and more will advance to the Territorial Star Search in Hershey Pennsylvania.

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners at the Territorial level receive trophies and scholarships for a week at the Music & Gospel Arts Camps at Star Lake in Bloomingdale, NJ or at TAM (Territorial Arts Ministry) in Suffern, NY.
